DESPOOKING - KODA

HORSE: Koda, 9yrs, Mustang gelding gathered in 2020 at 7yrs old from Eagle, NV.
SITUATION: Fear and reluctance to approach or engage with novel objects like tarps, bags, cardboard, poles, and balls.
GOAL: Koda is confident and curious with new things and willingly explores and interacts with different novel objects.

Summary & Conclusion

Koda is an extremely sensitive, reactive mustang that required a lot of time and experimentation with different approaches before he could be touched and eventually handled by me. He was still, however, wary of new people and easily triggered into flight mode or avoidance behaviors with new objects such as poles, bags, cardboard, tarps, balls, and anything else man-made that he was not familiar with.

After noting his behavior during a baseline empowerment exercise in January, we worked regularly on despooking. By early March he was able to stand on cardboard, blankets, feed bags, and tarps, play fetch, nose a large ball, and step confidently over poles. Introducing a bike for the first time initially triggered a flight response, but as shown in this video, in the span of about 15 minutes, he was able to use his new skills and confidence to regulate his response to the bike.
